John Gaines Swim Center is a community pool located in the Mueller neighborhood in Austin, TX. It features a canopy with an integrated architectural 6.0 kw solar installation. The installation is an example of a collaborative effort with the architects to realize the dual use of solar panels as both a shading device and an on site energy source. Their placement was thought out carefully to ensure adequate shade, such as a greater consolidation over the children’s pool.
Its presence at a community pool reinforces the energy-water nexus that is a pillar of the concept of integrated design. Lighthouse worked closely with Stanley Archtiects to ensure that solar was not seen as the thing to hide, but the system to celebrate. It is a choice, we hope can resonate with the patrons of the pool for years to come.
